Stories of
FUKUSHIMA
They are facing the challenge of getting back the pride of Fukushima, saving the environment and community which the youth and the government can be proud of through the lessons on the nuclear disasters brought by the Great East Japan Earthquake.
Getting the beautiful sea, Usuiso Beach, Fukushima
One of the top 100 beaches in Japan

Usuiso Beach
The beautiful beach has been selected as one of the top 100 beaches in Japan. It used to be the best place for sea bathing in the summer. The sand is called "Nakisuna (weeping sand)" since you can hear the sound when you walk on the sand. The seawater facing the Pacific Ocean has high transparency. From Usuiso Beach, you can see the Shioyazaki Lighthouse. Beyond Shioyazaki Lighthouse, there is Toyoma Beach, a small fisherman's town that has a lot of Inns and fish cake factories which used to be the best place for surfing. The town depends on the nature and resources of the sea.
However, these two towns were destroyed by the tsunamis from the Great East Japan Earthquake. Moreover, the towns were influenced by harmful rumors, leading people to leave these places. However, there were the survivors confronting the sea which took their relatives, families, friends, and companies from them. They struggle to get back their beautiful sea.
The three damaged communities, Toyoma, Usuiso and Numanouchi launched the "Umimachitoyoma Citizen's League" together. They started to work on the reconstruction and improvement project of Iwaki City and the communities. In 2017, Usuiso Beach reopened for sea-bathing for the first time in seven years with the approval of the Fukushima prefecture. Now, they are promoting events and activities to attract the people in and out of the prefecture for visits and settlements in the areas.
The sea of Fukushima will never give up in relaying the culture, life, and traditions it has brought up for the future. The sea won't forget you passed the baton of life to tomorrow.
